Open Series Talks

In collaboration with the Master of Architecture & Urbanism (M.Arch)

University of Hertfordshire.

  • User-Centred Design

Our sixth Master of Architecture & Urbanism 'Open Talk Series' sees Wyn Jones of Entia give a talk on 'User-Centred Design'.

Wyn Jones is the current Head of Design at London-based medical devices startup Entia. He is an accomplished design leader and intrapreneur with the ability to demonstrate the value of design thinking by converting abstract strategies, trends and insights into concrete user experiences through physical and digital products and services. With a career, both commercially & in design education across the UK & Australia, the perspective and passion Wyn has is tremendously valuable.

  • Levels of Circularity in the Built Environment

Our fifth Master of Architecture & Urbanism 'Open Talk Series' sees Cristina Fernandez give a talk on 'Levels of Circularity in the Built Environment'.

Cristina is focused on the research of the Circular Economy model applied to the architecture and built environment, to develop a more sustainable urban design and building construction, reducing their climate impact. Gaining knowledge on that field through continuous education in institutions as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the Delft University of Technology (TUDelft). She is a member of ASA (Spanish Sustainability and Architecture Association), where she leads their Circular Economy working group, giving lectures and collaborating with national and international institutions to promote circular strategies.

  • Urban Anthropology in Practice

Our fourth Master of Architecture & Urbanism 'Open Talk Series' sees Paula Petkova of Fosters+Partners give a talk on 'Urban Anthropology in Practice'.

Paula is part of the Urban Design team at Foster + Partners, a diverse group of planners, spatial designers, economists, anthropologists, landscape architects and mobility groups working together to create thriving and resilient environments.

  • 'Senseable Cities'

Our third 'Open Talk Series' sees Tom Benson of MIT give a talk on 'Senseable Cities'.

Tom moved to Boston to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Senseable City Laboratory as a Research Fellow, directed by Professor Carlo Ratti. The Laboratory explores, develops and deploys dynamic tools to learn about cities, characterised by an Omni-disciplinary design methodology operated by designers, planners, engineers, physicists, biologists and social scientists. They aim to create a real-time city, looking at layers of networks and digital information and finding new approaches to study the built environment.

  • “Notes from the Grave: The Architecture of Wangi Power Station”

In collaboration with the school's ARCH+ Research Seminar, our first Open Series Talk of the semester will see Prof. Michael Chapman present his latest research: “Notes from the Grave: The Architecture of Wangi Power Station”.

This research investigates architectural research and collaboration from a number of different and complementary perspectives, focussing on the ageing and derelict Wangi power station, near the Australian city of Newcastle. The research explores multidisciplinary approaches to understanding and documenting the heritage and complexity of the state-listed monolith, engaging with archival, geotechnical, theoretical, pedagogical and creative methodologies, with a particular focus on architectural drawing and communication in the history and future of the site.
